2009 Tail of The Dragon run (Edited 12/04)
« Thread Started on Sept 22, 2008, 8:50pm »

(Due to popular demand we will also have a local 1 day Spring Run)

The TOD run will take place from Midnight Thursday May 14, 2009 to Sunday May 17, 2009.

(That's right... Another NER late night cruise and yes you will need to take Friday off from work)

We will leave Thursday night at midnight from (will be edited). It will be a 15 hour ride if we leave from Hartford, CT. This would get us to the Tapoco Lodge in North Caroline around 3:00 pm Friday.

We will check in and then have dinner and party.
Saturday morning we will wake up and cruise the roads of the dragon and the skyway.

Have dinner again Saturday night and spend another night at the lodge.

Lunches we will figure out on the fly. Who knows where we will be once we get driving the local roads.

Sunday we will leave. It's up to you what time you want to leave. I'm sure most of us will leave early to make it home by midnight.

Details on the room and food cost as well as payment options can be found here:

We are looking at a Thursday - Sunday event.
I'm envisioning leaving after dinner Thursday night and driving straight there. The ride is 16 hours. So if we leave at say 7pm we could be there around noon Friday. Check into the hotel and go play on on the dragon.

We would stay Friday and Saturday nights with dinners Friday and Saturday and breakfast Saturday and Sunday.

I figure if we leave Sunday morning around 8am we could be home around midnight.

Also I'm thinking we should do the cruise some time in April or May.

I'm willing to bet we'll be making very generous contributions to the local tax base...

After my Jan 06 trip driving on completely deserted roads over the new years holiday on Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, , I was so dying to go farther South and do this.
I'll be down for this for sure! It gives me something to shoot for over the Winter when I'm wrenching on the car.
I vote that when we see the 1st cop on the Dragon, we just all pull over and each give him $200 for the inevetable speeding ticket we'll get before were through ;)

Don't bother...

I understand, to better serve the public, the local circuit court opened a field office in Deal's Gap.

So they can better serve the public...

(joking off course)

the LEOs are fully dependent on when you are on the dragon... In the past two years we have gone I have probably only seen 4-5 (that's 6 days of dragon-time)... All of those were on one day (Saturday) when the weather was nice out.

The LEOs are MUCH more populated on the weekends (obviously) and during peak times (both time of day and after it gets warm out). We were "fortunate" this year because it rained for nearly the entire trip (except for the Sunday that we were leaving). Then again, we went a week before the local area hotels opened up and our "high" temps were probably around 60ºF near the lake and much colder on the Cherohala Skyway. With lots of rain on the dragon it was actually surprising how much traction there still was, and the only "incident" was one of the Crossfire guys that lost it and put the car into the mountainside.

The '07 trip yielded sunshine and cool (50-55ºF) temps during the day, and on my solo night time run I even encountered flurries through the higher elevations (I need to find the tape of this, my reaction was pretty funny).

I think that I would have to meet you guys down there as PA is a lot closer to TN than New England.

Innnnnnnteresting Taylor. We may take you up on that. That's a great looking place. How many rooms does it have? Did I count 11? Maybe we can work something out and I'll organize a cruise out there for a weekend one of these days.

well thank you very much. yes we have 11 rooms. the surrounding area is beautiful. we have lots hiking and biking trails as well as white water rafting and paintball. Pocono raceway is also close, about 30 minutes. the roads around here are quite fantastic as well. I'm sure i could work a good deal for all of those interested, assuming you let me get to all of the checkpoints first ;)
