Well me and a friend have already decided that we would like to participate in the 2009 rally. We just have one problem - the Audi A8L that we were going to take isn't available during the rally. Our backup car is a 2006 Ford Escape.
Is it suicide going in an Escape? Will we be completely and utterly left in the dust?
We're probably going to go anyway, but we only have 170WHP under the hood!
I guess this serves as my official hello post to everyone! Dibs on the lucky number 13!

Welcome aboard! Nothing wrong with the Escape, some people went in a Dodge Durango and a Grand Caravan one time. Its all about the fun, not so much about what you drive.
I did a rally in our mini van once, lol. We had 6 people in there and had a blast. Its a slapstick transmission, so its kinda fun to drive. I say go for it.

You can just pass all the others as they get pulled over in their flashy cars : P We took the wife's Toyota Echo on one of the fall fun runs and my daughter's Subaru Impreza 2.5RS on the August 2007 run. Dependable is better than fast on a 1,500 mi run anyway.

Cool, sounds like a really fun trip. I'm really excited about doing this; I've wanted to do a rally of some sort forever and I'm finally in the position where I have the time and the money so I decided to jump on this one.
Maybe, just maybe the Escape will surprise a few people. I've been searching on the net all day for upgrades, and I seem to have found a few that fit within my budget!

Sounds good man, you wont regret doing the rally.
Another thing about the Escape is that you can load up a cooler full of drinks to enjoy while driving. Be sure and pass us one lol.

You'll have fun in anything you drive. As was stated... It's not waht you drive... It's all about having fun.
Some cars will most likely be ahead of you, but I'm sure there will be a lot more that are in cruise mode.

So I know it's not a race, but just out of curiosity, I assume there are a certain few people that had a habit of arriving very quickly at each checkpoint? ;D
Is it more of a "fast group/slow group" kind of deal or do people just cruise individually? At roughly what speeds to the faster people drive as well as the people that are in cruising mode?
Sorry for all the questions, but I'm new to this whole rally thing?

I don't think we want to mention speeds specifically.
I find that a group of people will cruise together, and often that group will change throughout the rally. Last year I started off with the G35/G37, went to the Porsche and SER, then the Subie, Evo and trucks, and finished with the Camaro and other Subie.
It's hard to guess who you'll be driving with, but it's usually best to stay in a group. It also depends on the traffic, and which route you take. There's always variations on who goes where.

Oh...and I have a slow car, but the van on the 07 rally blew half of us away.
I wouldn't worry that much about where you are in relation to how you drive, you'll figure it out along the way.

Um... Everyone drives the speed limit That's about all I'll say on that.

The good part about diving in groups, even small groups, is that if someone has a mechanical failure you have some friends around to help. Last year one guy had a new (to him) Porsche and blew a rear tire with no spare and no close place to fnd a replacement. Thanks to some new friends that drove with him he was able to make the overnight stay and even get his car back home in one piece with help of his friends.

Ya but he was pissed that "the rally spirit was not there" because someone wouldn't lend him his spare. Even though 3 other cars dropped out of the run to stay with him and one guy drove him 3 hours each way to pick up his car the day after the rally ended.
I'm still mind blown about that. Russ is a good guy. I just wish he noticed the 6 people that stayed with him when he was thinking that the rally spirit was not there.
If you ask me... 6 people dropping out of the rally to stay with him IS rally spirit.

that's the way it goes though. its different for everyone, i got nailed with a ticket and still had a blast and made friends with everyone at each check point. and the bars in Boston too ..lol.
as long as u enjoy driving, comradeship, fun places, seeing new England you'll have a blast, no matter what.
after all
its all about the drive.

I saw Russ 2x this weekend. Saw him on Rt 1 on Sat in the AM. and I waved at him as I passed his house later that day. I like Russ but I still razz him when given the opportunity.

The first year I went in a 300zx, the 2nd in a Saturn Ion, and the third year in a Durango. Truthfully, in some ways I enjoyed the Durango more than the Z. You have tons of room for your stuff, you don't get blinded by every jackass on the road, it rides better, has room for more electronics (Sirius, GPS, CB, V1, cell chargers, power inverters....you name it), and has more room to stretch out while cruising. Plus, I think everyone was undisputedly jealous of my ability to fold my seats flat and set up an air mattress to nap at extended checkpoints. ;D If you go in with the right mentality you'll have fun regardless of what you drive. Plus, the Cummins and I enjoyed passing everyone at the gas stations last year. Somehow the two tanks had to stop for gas the least.

I'm halfway tempted to add a 20 gallon fuel cell in my trunk. Don't trust it in the case of a crash though; it would suck to get blown up.

Don't trust it in the case of a crash though; it would suck to get blown up. Way to be optomistic The C5 Z06 i'll be taking has the best millage in the family. I averaged 22.3 MPG during the spring run this past weekend. I was damn impressed. Not the biggest tank in the house but i'll take it.

I just strapped a 3 gal portable can in the trunk in case we needed gas and were in the middle of nowhere.... We really had no need to use it however, except one stop in NH that only carried 91 oct and the car is tuned for 93 minimum.
