so you remove the positive cable when running and the car runs better? You have something grounding out, which is backfeeding through the ignition system... When you remove the positive terminal from the battery, you are breaking the ground circuit of the charging system, and getting rid of the backfeed.

That sounds right about right, but where the hell to start looking? I need to find it or I'm going to go crazy. I'll look around tomorrow again.
Although the oil/smoke issue may put the Z out of commission. Looks like another engine (or Z) is in my distant future lol.

Start unplugging bulbs... one at a time...

Today I started pulling fuses and testing volatge from both sides. All of them are 14.1 from positive and 0 from ground. BUT when I unplug the engine cont fuse and test I get get .89 volts from ground and 14.1 from positive. If I plug the fuse in and test I get 13.89.
Now... I believe this is the ECU fuse, but when I pulled it the car didn't die or do funky things. I would think that if the engine control unit was unplugged the car would shut off.
Also why is there power coming from ground from this one fuse? I wouldn't think it's a bad ECU. I'd think there was a wire shorting out.
Suggestions(Other than retire it Dale)? I didn't see any weak or broken wires when I looked at the ecu.

well you might be getting a signel feed for the ECU, Most ECU's need a signel witch will be under 1 volt

looks like that fuse controls not the ecu, but engine components such as EVAP, o2 sensors, etc.. Start unplugging stuff, and see when that goes to 0v

It's labled Engine Cont. I figured it was the ECU.

I don't think that it is the ECU... I think the motor would die if you killed power to the ECU, well it does on my cars anyway.
I am not sure what all that fuse controls, but I would like to know if you can track it back to a relay etc. Most fuses drive relays, and if the relay is stuck etc, may be part of it. After that I would recommend removing, then re-adding the devices behind that one at a time till you figure out what it is. I am not familiar enough with Nissan specifically to have a good guess, but do have a call out to a friend who does allot of nissan work, but not heard back from him yet.

I don't think it's the ECU either to be honest.
I'm researching on Z forums and things are leading to audio, rear antenna motor, or power windows as of now. I'll update you when the rain goes away.

Update on this... I heard back from my friend who does allot on Nissan work, and he really didn't have any solid / standard failures that explains what you are describing. But his comment was he also hates chasing electrical gremlins.
Any further news on thsi from your end.?
