Hi, I just signed up for the 2010 Rally. My friend and I will be going in his 2007 a4. Pretty excited about it. Things about me: - Name: Jacob Swain
- Live: Dover, NH
- Work: web designer/developer at vigilantinc.com / vigilantwoodworks.com
- Really into endurance driving, hoping to do a cross country drive or two this year. (depends on finances and time off).
- Graduated from Clarkson University in Potsdam NY last May
- I drive a 95 Camry (still hanging on to my first car, which happens to be an amazing vehicle) but looking to upgrade to an e46 3 series, ideally the coupe.
Alright I think that sums up the important stuff. For you NER veterens out there, what was something that you forgot/didn't bring on your first rally that you will be sure to snag this time?

A spare gas can. A few stretches last year up in Maine were pushing the limits of the car's gas tank. Especially the long night drive because there was NOTHING open at those hours. A small white board to write on? A 2 way radio is good to have but after about 5 mi between cars you can only reach each other by cell phone and even that is sketchy in some areas.

Beer for the ending celebrations. Then again i was so tired it woudlnt have mattered. This year with the addition of the hotel it will help at the end. I will be sure to stop at the packie before the end. My first rally was last year. I was pretty prepared, maybe even over prepared. I had so much crap i never used. Some was "just in case" type stuff though which i will likely be bringing again. I also forgot a white board which would have been fun a couple of times but we were not on too many roads where we were side by side. Many were 1 lane twisties that we enjoyed. I used this thread to help in the prep. There are some pretty good list on there. newenglandrally.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=rally&action=display&thread=948

I've kept a whiteboard in my car since the day I got it. Been fun every once in a while.
Been there with the driving through western/northern Maine at night with the "e" light on.
I'm still a bit foggy on the timing of this drive. I know that the checkpoints are a secret (and that is a good thing IMO), but what is the driving schedule roughly? Drive all day Friday, Sat, and Sun? I'm trying to plan for what days to take off of work. Would working at 8am Monday be a possibility?

You don't get to know the schedule lol All you get to know is to be at the start at 8am becase we are leaving at 10 am.
You WILL need to take Friday off, but you should be able to make it to work on Monday just fine. We should be wrapping up around 3pm or so on Sunday.

I understand the cooler, and the red bull.... why sugar free? Sugar shock can set into effect... And as far as the beer comment goes.. EVERYBODY chuckled at Dmitry & I when we showed up last to the hotel in downtown boston two years ago... Then everybody got REALLY jealous when they saw us take the case of beer out of the back seat and realized THAT was why we got to the hotel last. ;D

It was a nice surprise to have a cold beer waiting at the Trapp Lodge when we got there too.

Are there expenses on the rally that I should be prepared for other than the obvious things (gas, food, tolls)? How much "spending money" should I plan on?

Depending how you drive, tickets are possible lol... But its pretty much the basics of a road trip.. And as far as spending money... Most of us party it up in the hotel.. some hanging out and drinking, some drinking & partying ninja style on the rooftops... But nothing super expensive really...

I think car 204 might be trying to avoid tickets this year. Both drivers have had their fair share recently. Not saying we wont have some fun on the roads... but I am not planning on getting any tickets... we will see how that actually goes though But as far as checkpoints/necessary/basic parts of the rally go, there aren't going to be any extra fees? Partying ninja style on the rooftops? This might be even better than I was originally imagining...

Nope.. typically everything at all the checkpoints is included (except sometimes food/drink)...
And yeah.. Last year our room was near a friend of ours... We had a big balcony, and there was sections of STEEP roof that had to be traversed to get from room to room... And in our drunkenness thought it was a great idea...
The next day we realized the steep drop to the concrete below and how bad an idea it really was lol.

My parents have some 2 way radios from like 5 years ago, not sure what the battery life is like on them though. I'm definitely going to have some on the trip, either I am buying them or borrowing them.
