I've had a few people ask me if I have ever considered either a hotel stay Friday night or another event somewhere over the weeked on future runs. They are aware that there would be an additional cost that would reflect in the entry fee as well.
I personally like the looooong over night drives, but I would not have a problem with adding another event of some kind or a Friday night dinner. This would break up the drive a bit. As of now I have no intention of changing things form the way they are now. I'm just curious on your opinions.
The options for this are:
A) Have an event Friday night, charge a $700.00 entry fee to cover the added costs and start the run earlier in the day.
B) Drop the "event" and have dinner late Friday before we start the over night. This means more driving less down time.
C) keep things as they are. 1 dinner, 1 event and 1 night in a hotel.
I don't mind doing more, but I prefer to drive. The more we do the less we are on the road cruising, but a Friday night dinner where we could socialize would be cool.
Chances are that we will always have the over night drive, but I will give people gime to relax at the checkpoints.

I say mail the stickers out ahead of time if possible so they can be ready to rock... And we START at like... 7am or something like that... Then have a breakpoint Friday night somewhere around say 11pm or something, and leave it up to everybody to find their own hotel... That way its just a place to sleep, and people can double up in rooms to save money.. Then start back up at 6am the next morning.. That way its not ALL NIGHT... But it at least gives a few hours for a power nap.... And NOT in a Hooters parking lot with people trying to take pictures of you while you sleep.

Sean, I enjoyed the night driving, but it's asking a lot to drive through Friday night. Part of that was the 4 hours of sleep we got Thursday night. Taylor shaved a good month off his life that weekend with all the Red Bull and Monsters he drank so he could stay up 36 hours straight.

We've done the drive through the night on Friday every year. Some people really love it and others, just don't have the endurance to do it and still function the next day.

I mean this year was far differant as we did have time to power nap in parking lots(at least I know I'm not the only one photographed sleeping lol) and it totally changed the atmosphere for Eric and I both. However some of us like boyfriend and I are living paycheck to paycheck so additional costs even something like $100 or finding another hotel would be kinda hard.
Though I do like the idea of having a longer checkpoint Friday night to relax and socialize. I find that even just not being in the car can be refreshing and power naps are really helpful for stints. Ideally your co-driver is supposed to nap while you drive, then they take over for the overnight portion or something like that. Obviously this can be hard to do while moving(I find it hard to sleep in cars), which is why longer checkpoints with the ability to nap is ideal.
Part of me thinks only getting a few hours of sleep in a hotel would make me more tired, like getting me up at 6am is not a pretty site and I know I can't be the only non morning person. Plus the other thing with hotels is having to wait on everyone getting up and getting their things together in the car etc....
Does that make sense?

Maybe just me but a heavy dinner before driving through the night would make people MORE LIKELY to doze off behind the wheel. I do see the rationale for the night drives taking place on the back roads (less conjestion, less police presence). HOWEVER if you did some remote back roads during the day, such as the upper lakes region in Maine (North of Sugarloaf), then looping down through NH, traffic shouldn't be too bad. I'd rather do ALL back roads personally, but the occasional 20MPH driver on a one lane road could give 30 rally cars fits....

Well yeah I wouldn't suggest driving right after finishing a large meal either. View it as swimming wait a while then jump back in that's why there would be the longer checkpoint. Oh and you want to see a whole other side to me? See me stuck in a car behind someone doing under the speed limit(or even the speedlimit if its like 20) lmao I don't even need to be driving to be screaming like crazy...

the night drive was awesome! don't change a thing other than being closer to 1500 miles. It's a rally if you make it easy you will have 400 cars trying to get in. Like Steve said "it's a rally saddle up cowboy".

i loved the overnight! as did dave! that is the type of driving dave and i were looking forward to! dont change a thing! and for those of you who are concerned about long hours of overnight driving..... you dont have to participate! i will agree with joeyb that it needs to be closer to 1500 miles though!
just my $.02

The majority of people like the over night drive. I 'm asking people's opinions because I like to hear the different responses to the long hours of the over night drive. A lot of the people that are not used to driving all night still have fun doing it. That is why I'm presenting other options to discuss. Just to see how people reply. I personally Like things how they are.

I think next year the overnight won't be as bad... I'm bringing a reclinable folding chair to the checkpoint so that i CAN take a nap... STi Recaros just dont cut it...

from taking the vid at the end the general consensus was that the overnight was awesome. personally, i say keep it the way it is, changing it to add an event or hotel night would only add more cost AND more stress for sean trying to organize everything this year was much better then last, NO ONE leaves till everyone is there and we have a lot more time, an hour or two, at checkpoints for people to nap. then again...i didnt nap the whole thing...47 straight hours awake on 6 hrs sleep thurs night

How about having dinner between 6-9pm on Friday night (have the stickers mailed so the cars are ready to roll when dinner is done. Then doing the overnight drive. Then check into a hotel around 12ish on Saturday, then you can get a power nap, then have an event late Saturday/early evening. Then back on the road Sunday late morning.
Just a thought.

mailing stickers = lots more work and money and this is not enough driving, theres way too much "taking naps"

Good ideas. The only issue with starting late on friday is that we would have to end it a lot later on Sunday to cover the miles I want to do.
I've considered mailing the graphics out. Thing is that the past couple of years I didn't finish the graphics until a few days before the run (I cut them myself). I'm going to try to get them done early this year.
I think the schedule will work out better this year. We are doing the event on Friday night and I am working with the hotel we are staying at to let us check in eaerlier.
