OK guys talking with sean i took a lil wait off him and planed out the route. now im avoiding tolls which should be lees cops as well but also making it run threw pa and other state so every one doesnt have to go 2 hrs north just to go 4 hrs south. From CT to PA i fig Reading area would be a good sopt to stop and meet people and we should need a refuel by that time as well here is the link to the page and map to see what im talking about maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=hartford+CT&daddr=Robbinsville,+NC+28771+(Tapoco+Lodge)&hl=en&geocode=%3BCTjJS-1cK9wkFWKrGwId1_H_-iH0rn8AKBBvHQ&mra=pe&mrcr=0&dirflg=t&sll=38.578667,-78.249498&sspn=8.498387,14.0625&ie=UTF8&ll=38.754083,-78.134766&spn=8.478119,14.0625&z=6 This topic is to talk about and agree on if this spot is good and what other spots are good to meet other people in other states. feel free to post. sean i will keep on this topic so you dont have too

Works for me : ) my parents live in Scranton so I can drive the Hartford to Scranton leg in my sleep! In New York state around Newburg you have to keep an eye out for cops but hit the PA border & from there to Scranton theres nothing but you and the occasional deer or two, the only area you usually see Staties on RT-84 in PA is around the Promised Land exit where there is a State Police barix. BTW, Front Royal VA (just East of your Rt 81S) is the start of Shannendoah National Park - Skyline Drive, which leads directly to the Blue Ridge Parkway in Swannanoa......awesome roads. Skyline Dr is a pay road but Blue Ridge is free. Also, the cops on that section of RT 81 in VA SUCK, we'll just have to be carefull around there..

lol. Glad to see I'm not the only one that needs a few days locked in a room with a dictionary.
The route looks great. This should give options for people to meet up along the way.

Holy Cornflakes!!! I used to live right off 81 in VA. In Winchester, VA. I now have to do this. Time for the M6 to get some good shocks and tires.
Dude there is a sheetz gas station in Winchester. Its got everything you desire there like coffee, food and stuff. There is also a McDonalds built inside a cabin a block down. Its neat.
There is some amazing places to eat there as well. Some are historic, so it will add a nice feel to it all.
I know that area like the back of my hand. I know all of the speed traps off 81. I found those the hard way. WARNING: NEVER GET A VA TICKET!!! It will cost you an arm and leg and your firstborn.

I personally will have to refuel every 190 miles, which sucks and its one thing that I hate about my car. I get about 13-15MPG, I think that is due to the older engine. Rebuilding it will be a pain and costly. So, I may get another car, though I am not sure yet. There was this extremely nice historic place called the Wayside Inn. Its been there since 1797 and George Washington used to go there. They have a display of some of his belongings. They also have the original well in the bar area. Its very neat. It is just off of 81. The price is around $15-40 per meal depending on what you get. You get a huge meal including breads, salads and soups. My ex-girlfriend used to work for the one of the owners and he was a very nice old man. He gave us all a nice family dinner there for Christmas last year. He also owns somekind of racing car team. I did have some coupons and his business card. I will see if I can find it. Here is the website: www.alongthewayside.com/

i agree on centralia, i wanted to go since i saw the silent hill movie and looked around a little online about this place, its actually been taken of quite a few maps
When I used to live in PA, Centralia had mine fires burning there for years. Parts of the town were uninhabitable. You would literally have fires burning below your yard.

I'm giving Bobby full control of the route. (Obviously I will have final say though) So work your ideas through him. Once he has it in stone I'll make the "official route" thread.

i think we will have to plan that for another trip. only because we will be in that area around six in the morning, and it adds just shy of an hour to the trip. and we still will have t go threw harrisburg triffic another hour later or so.
i was looking for a stopping point right off the highway so we dont lose any time on your run. but it sound like a good place for a one day spring run (sean)lol

I was reading local reports of centrailia and it looks like it wouldnt be safe to stop there late at night or early morning. They have reports of some crazy people going there to party. The locals say to stay away from there before the sun comes up. (Sounds like the makings for a good zombie movie to me)
Anyway, I recommend stopping at Sheetz Gas Station off of 81 in Winchester. You can order all kinds of food and custom coffee drinks. You get your order pretty fast aswell. We can eat, refill and go.

do you know the exit number for that?

Exit 315, its one of two in Winchester. The other is few more exits down.
Its right next to 81 and the ramp has a pathway from the parking lot.
I dont know if you have ever been to sheetz, but it is pretty neat. We dont have the kind of thing in Indiana.
You can order the food anyway you want it via a touch screen. You can also make your own coffee on there , like I said before. Its all cheap too.

Here is what im looking at so far
we starting in the hartford area, 1st meet spot will be in West Hazleton PA near the I81 & RT294 interchange. That should put us in the area of the first fill up. This puts us here about 4ish in the morning that fri
The Winchester VA exit 315 @ the sheetz puts us on the Maryland/ VA boarder so people in that area can meet us there. at about 7:00 ish in the morning
this gives us still another stop and atleast one more fuel point because we still got another 8 hrs or so to get there. Hanging rock VA is about half way between the lodge and winchester. any body know anything about that area?
and from there i think we should make it or come close to the lodge at this point and should have picked up everyone that will be coming on the trip.

Underground Coal Fire, 45 years later - Centralia, PA "The ruins of Centralia Pennsylvania no longer exists on some maps. The story began sometime in 1962 along the outskirts of town when trash was burned in the pit of an abandoned strip mine, which connected to a coal vein running near the surface. The burning trash caught the exposed vein of coal on fire. The fire was thought to be extinguished but it apparently wasn't when it erupted in the pit a few days later. Again the fire was doused with water for hours and thought to be out. But it wasn't. The coal then began to burn underground. That was in 1962. For the next two decades, workers battled the fire, flushing the mines with water and fly ash, excavated the burning material and dug trenches, backfilled, drilling again and again in an attempt to find the boundaries of the fire and plan to put the fire out or at least contain it. All efforts failed to do either as government officials delayed to take any real action to save the village. " They weren't kidding either, they had whole houses swallowed up in sink holes as the mine fires burned out the ground underneath.

..just got back from Scranton PA. I found this place in Dickson City, just a few miles from the connnection of RT 380/81 in Scranton... It might be worth a stop for lunch/dinner on the way down or back. It's about 4 hours from the Hartford, CT start : ) The wait staff dress up as a pit crew and they have a NASCAR stock car on the front roof. Here's the address of the Dickson City resturant www.quakersteakandlube.com/Scranton_PA/More info on the various locations available www.quakersteakandlube.com/
