Here is an idea for a new cheap project. I call it Project Oddball, because it is an escort after all.
Ford Escort Hatchback + Mazda BPT engine = cheap fun? Add a cheap paintjob from Maaco. $250 Add cheap racing seats from Advance Auto. $200 Add custom rollcage with help from my dad(former auto fabricator). I have all the tubing in the garage, so this one is free!!
The BPT swaps right into a escort and both the car and motor are cheap and easy to find. My friends dad has a escort hatch that needs a bit of work for $500.
The whole thing would be around $2300 with the BPT engine. I could have it done in 2-3 months.
This would be my autocross car and general beater. Whacha think?

Still to much for the grassroots motor sports challenge, but for someone like me, I would never turn down a project like this.
I would just do it. sounds to much fun to turn down.

Not a bad idea at all... as long as the drivetrain holds up, it would rock.
What about something like this? Take an old Karmann Ghia, or a Type 3 VW and stuff a boosted Ecotec into it? Funny thing is, they make all the trans adapters and everything for this already, just would have to buy the right parts and bolt it in (and figure out where to put a radiator). If you didn't want to go boosted, you can get a 2.2 Ecotec that makes 160HP from a junkyard for about $400. I've seen it done on a bus, and a Ghia.
Can you imagine 250+ HP in a Type 3 VW fastback? I'd rock that... the Vette guys would never know what hit 'em!

the bpt engine in an escort is one of the funnest cars i've ever ridden in.
my friend jon has the 320 hp GTR motor in his, and my friend jeff had a gtx in his escort, and now has the gtx or r in his '88 323 gtx.
let me know if you need any knowledge help, jon has a custom geared trans he built himself and is running a group buy going on LSD's.

I started part of this last year. I already have a rebuilt 5-speed with GTX gears 3,4 and 5(taller than the escort gears) and I got the engine harness from a Escort GT. I will be heading to Louisville, KY to pick up a BP from a Escort LX-E this week. I am picking up the car this week as well. I am not going to turbo until later on(to save money), so I am getting some Tokico HP shocks with Ground Control Coilover sleeves. I am building a custom turbo setup using a T3/T4 hybrid turbo, but all this will have to come later.
I just need to head to the junkyard and pick up the 5 speed swap parts(car is automagic). A junkyard is like disneyland to me. I always walk out with more than I came for.

I love that VW idea. I was just looking up the Scirocco and Karmann Ghia(I was wanting to learn more). Perhaps that is next........

Sorry for thread jacking... this is all I'll mention about the Ecotec in a Ghia... it's been done. If you want to discuss it, start a thread and I'll tell you everything I know about the swap.
