Hi all. I'd really like to hear from last years riders, if they are still around. Basically I'm looking for any pointers or suggestions on how to better prepare for the rally. Mechanically our bikes will be set. We'll have chain maintenance essentials with us.
I've been eyeing luggage on ebay. But I am curious as to just what is needed. Packing minimal, but adequate enough to have what I need, would be nice. What do you consider needed?
Looking through all the pics posted from previous years, I see there is alot of people sleeping in cars. What did the bike guys do? (I'm not afraid to pitch a tent)
Anything you'd like to tell a complete road rally newbie?

The guys that did it in 2007 had a friend do the rally as well in a car, and they put their luggage into that car.. Where are you from? I am pretty sure that other people on the rally would be more than willing to hold your luggage for you.. And the sleeping in the cars was usually at rest areas in between checkpoints... The bike guys just drank ALOT of power trip... And had people like me screaming out the window at them to wake up as they drove through upstate new york at 530am...

You should be ok with the sleeping. I'm giving you a couple of checkpoints that you can catch a power nap for a while before we leave.
I agree with Noah. If you can get a friend with a car to drive with you that would be your best bet, but we may have a truck follow us that you can put your luggage in. I'm working on that, it just all depends on the status of my finances when the run comes.
My biggest suggestion is rain gear "just incase".

+2 on rain gear. Nothing worse than 20 hrs of riding in a cold rain at night.

Where are you from? I am pretty sure that other people on the rally would be more than willing to hold your luggage for you.. We are from Haverhill MA. I doubt any other friends would be interested in coming. Not many of my friends have $600 disposable income, or the desire to drive that far. You should be ok with the sleeping. I'm giving you a couple of checkpoints that you can catch a power nap for a while before we leave......we may have a truck follow us that you can put your luggage in. I'm working on that, it just all depends on the status of my finances when the run comes My biggest suggestion is rain gear "just incase". Sleeping at checkpoints? Did the bike guys roll out sleeping bags or what? Is it correct that we will be staying 1 night in a hotel room, the other night we will wing it? We will have rain gear. I am going to be buying a high quality rain suit in the very near future.

Correct. The first 30 or so hours are spent on the road with stops at checkpoints. Night 2 we sleep in beds.
Next year we may do a hotel Friday and Saturday... I'll get into details about that after this run.

Thanks for the replys so far.
Does everyone generally drive/ride together as a group? Or do all the teams split up?

Many teams paried up as groups, especially during the night drive.

Yeah... we usually try to stay somewhat together on the night drives... It might be even better if you get intercoms for the helmets... That way you can communicate with us via the 2 way radios..

Actually we are in the process of getting helmet headsets. We will be using FRS/GMRS radios.
